Teenager Grant Ganzi of Casablanca will make a little more history when he competes in the Iglehart Cup that gets under way Friday at International Polo Club.

Ganzi, 15, a sophomore at St. Andrew’s, will be the youngest team captain and player-patron to field his own team when Casablanca plays Los Machitos/Heathcote in an opening round game at 3 p.m. in the last 20-goal tournament of the season.

Ganzi will be joined by teammates Lucas Lalor, Jeff Hall and Nic Roldan.

Casablanca has been successful winning the Pedro Morrison Cup, US Trust Cup and USPA Kay Colee Memorial Cup.

Casablanca also qualified for the finals of the USPA North America Cup 20-Goal Tournament before losing to his dad’s team, defending champion Audi.

Ganzi honed his skills during the summer and fall polo seasons at his home club, Grand Champions. He was also a member of the inaugural National Youth Tournament Series title with the Florida Zone All-Star team.

Ganzi already has one 20-goal tournament game under his belt.

In preparation for the Iglehart Cup, he competed in the George Haas Cup final and helped his Audi team win its first tournament of the season with an 11-9 victory over Faraway last Sunday.

Ganzi filled in for his father, Marc, Audi team captain and patron, and played alongside Roldan, Lalor and Fred Mannix.

“That was the whole idea for Grant playing this game was to get him ready for the Iglehart,” Roldan said. “Now he has one game under his belt and now we get ready for this next one.”

At 15, Ganzi is one of the youngest player-patrons to win a 20-goal tournament in the U.S.

“I played this game to get ready for the Iglehart,” Ganzi said. “It really helped my confidence. We know the next game is going to be a little faster and little more brutal.”
