After a successful show in 2010 and an enormous increase of competitors in 2011, Andrea Weinberg has taken a big step forward and will hold 2 international shows in 2012, on the premises of her mother Helena Stormanns.

Andrea is a qualified Event Manager, she completed a valuable apprenticeship in Aachen at the famous World Equestrian Festival. Andrea is currently working for LOCOG as assistant manager, Dressage and Jumping, for the London 2012 Olympics.

Friday’s schedule has the tours for the young horses up to Intermediaire II and M tests for amateurs.  On Saturday the Short Grand Prix will be a definite highlight, and on Sunday we will see two lots – separated into pros and amateurs – of the Prix St. George, the Young Horse Grand Prix and the Freestyle.  Word has got round about what the Ankum Dressage Club has been putting on and that has had results.  “We have had enquires from right across the country”, says Ullrich Kasselmann, who, together with Paul  Schockemöhle, has acquired the auction centre and is filling the newly-modernised building with new life.

The competitors in this second ADC Tournament come from all over Lower Saxony and Westphalia, and they are using the generous range of events on offer to prepare themselves for the outdoor season, and to provide young horses with experience and more routine.

Dutch dressage rider Adelinde Cornelissen is at the top – at the top of the FEI World Rankings, at the top of Europe (since winning the Individual and Freestyle at the Championships in Rotterdam) and maybe soon at the top of the world at the Olympics in London? Many experts predict so – because 32-year-old Adelinde and her horse Parzival are just a unique team. In this interview Adelinde talks to horseweb.de about her partnership with Parzival, about her career and what she is expecting in London 2012…

You and Parzival are the best team in dressage at the moment. You won the Individual and Freestyle at the European Championships in Rotterdam. Now the Olympics are just ahead. How do you plan for 2012?

I will ride the World cup finals in Den Bosch first. I want to ride there, because I want to defend my title and moreover it is in my home country! The outdoor season we have two competition for the team, the Dutch Championships and Rotterdam, for the rest I do not quite know yet…

What is your aim for the Olympics? Which chances do you see for you and for the team of the Netherlands?

I never focus so much on the results.. I hope we can have a good team there! We have some really talented horses and experienced riders, so I am hoping we can surprise everyone…

Parzival is a really special horse. I remember the time he got frightened sometimes while the class. But he always fights for you. How would you characterize him?

He sure is special! I have never seen any horse like him! He is a professor! He cannot talk, but can make clear what he likes or doesn’t like very easy… for instance, if you brush with the hard brush you can go on for hours, but once you take the soft brush, you have to watch it.. ears in his neck, trying to bite.. taking the hard brush again and within half a second ears to the front enjoying it!

If you look back at your successes with Parzival – which one was the most special for you?

As said before I do not go for results so much.. I just love the fact that everybody told me to quit riding him , because it was not going to work anyway.. Parzival was way too spooky etc.. And now he is showing his talent! Just love it!

At the WEG in Kentucky you had been eliminated because Parzival was bleeding in the mouth. How did you experience that moment? What do you think is the correct way for the FEI to handle such issues?

I do not care so much about winning, so also not about loosing.. which made it a bit easier in Kentucky… Sure, I enter to win, but when some one is better.. ok.. I must say I will go home more motivated and train better, so I can beat everyone the next show of course! But it was correct to ring the bell in Kentucky when Parizval bit the tip of his tongue and a bit of blood could be seen.. Sad was, that when I was out of the arena the bleeding had stopped already! Moreover, the rules afterwards were definitely not clear.. and I think it is a good thing that the FEI is trying to make them more clear now…

Your career is really impressive – in about two years to the top of the world…
Would you say Parzival is a once-in-a-lifetime horse?

I would say so! He definitely is soooo special! But I must say my boyfriend and I just bought a new horse, Galahad, and he seems pretty amazing as well….

What other upcoming horses do you have? Do you think there is a chance they will be as good as Parzival in some time?

Like said above.. we have Galahad now.. – another one of King Arthur’s knight of the round table But I do not like to compare horses.. They all have their own qualities.. Then I also have Tiara and Ulissa, both doing Prix St Georges.. And Zephyr is also one that might surprise people…

You´ve worked as a teacher once. When did you decide to become a professional rider?

When I entered the Olympic Squad in 2008 , I had to choose.. I could no longer combine working as a teacher and trying to do topsports… I chose the riding, keeping in mind I can always go back tot he classroom…

What was your first contact with horses? Did you fall in love with them at once?

My parents did not know anything about horses.. but they had a big garden.. They thougth it would be nice to lease a couple of shetland ponies during wintertime.. We just had to take care oft hem.. After winter the shetland ponies had to go back and of course I was sooo sad… I think I was 3 years old.. They told me to ride a year at the riding school first when I was 6 and then if I still would like it, I would get my own pony.. and so I did. At the age of 7 I got my first pony, Birgitte…

Do you have a rider/dressage rider you admire?

Not one in particular.. But I think you can learn from everybody.. Not only dressage by the way.. You can find me at the warm up, watching not only dressage, but also jumping or four in hand driving…

Did you try more riding disciplines or have you always been sure dressage is “your” sport?

I never really picked dressage – just a big coincidence. I used to do everything, dressage, jumping, eventing.. Then I came across Parzival and had to ride dressage, because I had no control without jumps, let alone with.. Once I got a bit of control, he was doing so good that I never changed…

What is the special thing about dressage for you?

Not so much dressage, but just the riding in total.. It is really nice when you work with a horse and see them change, become an athelete and see how they build up muscles etc and that the communication between you and the horse gets more detailed…

What is the first thing you´re looking at when you see a horse? What is most important for you when you train a horse?

First I look at its eyes.. They tell me a lot.. For training of course the horse needs to be well build, and needs to be willing to work/go forward…

When you are not riding what are you doing in you free time?

I love sports. I go running every morning.. Mondays and Wednesdays and Fridays I do physical training

Do you have a philosophy in life?

Life is not tried, it is merely survived , if you are standing outside the fire!

What is your biggest wish for the future?

I never plan that far ahead.. moreover, I live the life I love, and love the life I live! What more to wish for?
